Brahmagupta - Biography

Brahmagupta is an ancient mathematician and astronomer. He had much influence on Islamic and
Byzantine astronomy.

Brahmagupta was an orthodox Hindu. The Hindu philosophy influenced him largely. The Hindu's had yuga system of measuring the ages of mankind. This system had influenced his works.

He was totally against the views of Jainism. It means that he did not agree with the views of Aryabhata I.

Brahmagupta's most famous work is Brahma-sphuta-siddhanta. It means 'Correctly Established Doctrine of Brahma'.

It is basically an astronomical work. However, it also contains many mathematical facts and truths.

It was written when he lived in Bhillamala. It was the capital of the Gurjara Pratihara dynasty.

This work was translated into Arabic. It was in the year 771. This work had influence on Islamic
mathematics and astronomy.

He also wrote another work. It was titled Khandakhadyaka. It means 'A Piece Eatable'. It was an astronomical handbook.

Aryabhata's system of starting each day at midnight was used in it. In boththese books he discussed mathematics.

He founded the base of two principles in mathematics. The first one was 'pati-ganita. It means 'mathematics of procedures. The second one was bija-ganita 'mathematics of seeds'.

He also studied the importance of zero and negative numbers.
